LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech Athletics Department announced Thursday that its TV schedule has been finalized for the 2012-13 women's basketball regular season as the Lady Raiders will make 18 appearances on television this year including eight games on Texas Tech TV on FOX Sports in conjunction with Red Raider Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Sports.
The eight home games on Texas Tech TV can be seen on FOX College Sports, FOX Sports Southwest or FOX Sports Southwest Plus as part of the third-tier rights package signed with FOX Sports in September.
The Lady Raiders will make their season debut on Texas Tech TV at 7 p.m. CT on Dec. 5 against Illinois as David Thetford will once again be the play-by-play voice and will be joined by former Lady Raider and WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes.
"We're excited about the opportunity to showcase our program to so many fans around the country and to have such a great partnership with FOX Sports," Tech head coach Kristy Curry
said. "It makes it even more special to make Sheryl apart of our broadcast team and have her back around Lady Raider basketball once again."
Swoopes was a two-time All-American from 1991-93 and the 1993 Naismith Award Winner and NCAA Tournament MVP as she led Texas Tech to the 1993 National Championship. She would go on to win three Olympic gold medals with the USA Basketball Women's National Team (1996, 2000, 2004) and was the No. 5 overall pick in the WNBA's Inaugural Draft. Swoopes played for 12 seasons and led the Houston Comets to the first four WNBA titles while winning three WNBA MVPs.
"I've accomplished everything I ever wanted to do on the basketball court and at every level. So now I am just as excited about pursuing my post WNBA career dreams and goals like sports broadcasting," Swoopes said. "With that being said I am so grateful for the opportunity to kickoff my broadcast career as a color analyst for basketball games at my alma mater, Texas Tech."
The Lady Raiders will also appear on FOX Sports Net four other times during the season as a regional or national broadcast, including the 1993 National Championship 20th Anniversary Celebration game against Texas on Feb. 17.
Texas Tech will also appear on a number of opponent regional networks during the season while it is on the road, including Sooner Sports Network (at Oklahoma, Jan. 12), WVU Sports (at West Virginia, Jan. 22), Cyclones.TV (at Iowa State, Feb. 2), FrogVision (at TCU, Feb. 9), and on K-StateHD TV (at Kansas State, March 2).
The Lady Raiders open the regular season on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT at Arizona State.
