May 18, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Texas Tech will head into Saturday's third and final round of the 2012 NCAA Greensboro Men's Golf Regional in contention for a berth in the NCAA Championships as the Red Raiders stand in sixth place at 13-over.
Despite struggling to a 7-over, 295 in the second round today, the Red Raiders managed to fall only one spot in the team rankings and are just one stroke away from the cut. The top five teams from this regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Liberty Flames continue to hold the lead at even par while SMU is six strokes back (6-over) in second place. No. 17 Florida turned in the best round of the day and climbed from 10th to third place and stand at 10-over. No. 5 Auburn and Lamar are just ahead of the Red Raiders in a tie for fourth place at 12-over.
Should the Red Raiders make the cut tomorrow, it would mark the fifth time in the last seven years that the Red Raiders earned a spot in the coveted NCAA Championships.
Freshman Matias Dominguez regrouped after a disappointing round on Thursday and turned in the team's top score in round two. Dominguez shot 5-over in the first round but was able to shave four strokes off in today's second round to finish 1-over. Overall, he is tied with teammates Finley Ewing IV and Esteban Restrepo for 33rd at 6-over, 150.
Freshman Clement Sordet, Tech's top player, got off to a sluggish start as he bogeyed four of the first five holes and was at 4-over par through five holes. Like he has done all season, he regrouped and logged 11 par's and two birdies to complete the round at 2-over, 74.
Henry Todd, one of four freshmen on the Tech scorecard, also turned in a 2-over, 74 for the day and is tied with Sordet for 18th on the overall leaderboard.
Texas Tech's quest for the NCAA Championships will begin at 6:55 a.m. (CT) on Saturday morning with the start of the final round. The Red Raiders will be paired with Auburn and Lamar and will tee off on the No. 1 tee box. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com
