LUBBOCK, Texas - As they have done throughout the season, both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders received national attention Tuesday with the release of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings.
The Red Raiders jumped seven spots to No. 3 while the Lady Raiders moved up to No. 6 in Week 6 of the national rankings entering the Big 12 Championships this weekend in Manhattan, Kan.
"I'm really excited - especially after this past weekend," head coach Wes Kittleysaid. "I feel like we gained so much momentum with our home meet and having the opportunity for people to compete. Everyone was stepping up and it's like they feel this is a championship time. I feel like that's where our kids are focused right now."
It marks the fourth time this season the two teams have appeared together in the top 10. The Lady Raiders were just outside the top 10 at No. 11 during both Week 2 (April 10) and Week 3 (April 17). The Red Raiders have been in the top 10 each week since opening at No. 4 in the preseason poll on March 22.
The Red Raiders made the largest jump of any team in the top 25 with the seven-spot leap. The squad benefited from the return of five-time All-American Gil Robertswho made his season debut in the 400 meter dash Saturday. Roberts won the event with a blazing time of 44.93 to edge out 2010 European Champion Kevin Borlee. With the time, Roberts jumped into the national lead in the event entering the Big 12 Championships.
Texas Tech set two school records at the Red Raider Open on Saturday at the Fuller Track and Field Complex. The Lady Raider 4x100 relay team opened the meet by breaking a seven-year record with a time of 43.53. Junior Shade Weygandtlater broke her own school record in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 4.50 meter (14'-9.00"). The mark also broke a facility record set by Weygandt in 2010.
Action will begin at the Big 12 Championships on Friday with the multi-events at 12 p.m. at the R.V. Christian Track Complex on the Kansas State campus.
