LUBBOCK, Texas -- Kelsi Baker scored 16 points and Jackie Patterson added 12 points and 10 rebounds as Texas Tech opened up exhibition play with a 77-62 win over Midwestern State on Sunday at United Spirit Arena.
Baker and Patterson led four Lady Raiders in double digits. Monique Smalls had 10 points and five assists while Casey Morris added 11 points and four steals.
"I thought we looked a little jittery, especially a couple of our new faces, but today was a great opportunity to work through some of those things," Texas Tech head coach Kristy Curry said. "It was great to have the lights on, a totally different environment then our scrimmage a week ago, and we certainly responded a little bit differently. So I think today was a really good thing for us."
The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the opening five minutes thanks in part to a defense that stifled Midwestern State early and forced five turnovers. Midwestern State would give up 25 turnovers overall, resulting in 29 points for Tech as Smalls and Morris combined for seven of Tech's 11 steals.
"Executing our plays, getting a steal and going for a layup, getting back and playing defense and getting stops," Smalls said. "That's what gets our offense going is when our defense comes together."
Midwestern State pulled within four points midway through the first half before Chynna Brown's moving jumper ignited an 11-4 run to help build a 38-27 lead at the break.
Then it became the Baker and Patterson show in the second half as the two combined for 19 points and 10 rebounds, led by Patterson who scored all but two in the second half.
"I thought Kelsi had a much better finish to the game then she did at the start of the game, she came out and was more active," Curry said. "Obviously Jackie looked a little bit jittery, but I thought she had a great finish. It was good to see both of those kids finish stronger down the stretch then how they started the game. You always want to finish strong."
Tech now shifts its focus to Arizona State, as the Lady Raiders open the regular season on the road in Tempe, Ariz., at 3 p.m. CT on Nov. 11.
