Texas Tech is making a huge change in it's basketball program. Reportedly, Texas Tech is hiring Minnesota's head coach Tubby Smith to become the new head coach of the Red Raiders. Tech hopes this one time national champion can pick this program up and bring it back to where it used to be.
The AP is reporting this and nothing is official, but in the case that everything contract wise goes well Tubby Smith will be on the side lines for Tech this upcoming season. Smith would be Techs fourth head coach in four years.
Tubby Smith would replace troubled Billy Gillepse, and try to help the people of Lubbock forget about the last few basketball years.
Tubby Smith's national championship came with Kentucky in 1998, during his tenure in Lexington he led UK to 10 straight NCAA tournaments, something Lubbock had never seen.
Smith would take over a rebuilding project of a team that has not made the NCAA tournament since 2007. Tech has been 20-43 in the last two seasons, and 4-32 in the Big 12. 3 of those wins coming this year.
