After a week off the diamond, 22nd-ranked Texas Tech did not have to wait long to hear its postseason fate Sunday evening as the Red Raiders were picked to the Washington Regional during the NCAA Selection Show.
The Red Raiders will open the three-day regional against Maryland at a time to be determined Friday. No. 16 national seed Washington and Harvard will play in the other first-round game in the double elimination format.
"It's a thrill to get to go to a place with such tradition and history like Washington has," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "This is probably the most beautiful place to play in the country. I'm excited that our Washington girls will get a chance to play in front of their family and friends."
The postseason selection is the fifth all-time in school history and the third-straight under Hays, who inherited a program in 2010 that had not advanced to a regional since 2001.
The Washington Regional winner will advance to face the winner of the Berkley Regional which is being hosted by No. 1 national seed California. The Red Raiders have fallen in the regional finale the last two years as no Tech team has ever advanced past the regional round.
The trip to Seattle is a homecoming of sorts for two Red Raiders as senior Ashley Hamada and freshman Cara Custer both hail from the state of Washington. Hamada, a Touchet native, hails from around four hours east of the Washington campus while Custer is just under an hour away.
Tech wrapped the regular season 40-15 overall and 13-10 in Big 12 play, marking the program's first winning conference record since the 2001 season. It is also the second-straight year where Tech has reached the 40-win mark.
The Big 12 Conference finished with six teams selected to the postseason with four schools among the top 10 seeds in No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Texas A&M, and No. 9 Washington. Baylor was the final league school selected as the Bears will travel to the Louisiana-Lafayette Regional.
TexasTech.com will have more details, including the tournament schedule, in the days heading into the regional.
